Toll House

Rod Gillatt finds new image of the Toll House in clearance shop in Buxton

The image provided by Rod Gillatt is interesting and differs from others. It shows two ladies stood outside the Grouse Inn probably taking a break from cooking. There is a wooden barrel of beer presumably just delivered and waiting to be rolled inside.

There are also two traps which would have been used to provide transport for one or two persons, once secured to a horse.

I am so pleased you have posted this photo! My husband and I live in New Zealand but his great-grandmother, Hannah Betony (1832-83) probably lived in the Toll House as a child. Her father, Joseph Betony (1798-1880), from Baslow, married Martha Lomas, who died in 1836. Joseph is listed as Toll Collector on the 1841 census when Hannah was eight. Thank you so much.
